“Where Creativity Blooms”

Yoquila Morris

Black Sons

Nonviolence

Peace

Turn the other cheek

We’ve reached our peak

There’s no time to speak, negotiate, or seek

We want blood, we want war, we’re ready to tweak

We’re killed while sleeping,

Killed while jogging,

Killed while playing,

Killed while driving,

Killed while walking,

Killed for laughing,

Killed for nothing

There’s more than 100 ways

We can be killed in America

The land of the Free

Death is the only guarantee

Wouldn’t you agree

What do I tell my black sons

Who only want to live and have fun

You’re skin will get you killed baby

Avoid trouble, the cops are crazy

If you ever come in contact with one

Do as you're told, keep your hands where they can see them and stay quiet

They’re blind to everything and everythings a gun

I’d rather you here with me than to have to start a riot

I know, I know

You don’t quite understand

But trust me as a black man

Nothing comes easy, not even life

So to live to see the next day

You have to think twice

Yes even while sleeping,

Laughing, or calling for help

We’re the only ones crying and suffering

While they just say Whelp!

And move on

The only time we’ll see change is

When the bodies of their children

Begin dropping like flies

Sad to say but its the truth

For no good reason & without a goodbye

I bet then we’ll see hell raised through the roof
